What is 316 Stainless Steel
What exactly is 316 Stainless Steel?
The addition of alloys is often done to steel to increase the desired properties. For instance, the marine-grade stainlesssteel, often referred to as Type 316, is resistant to aggressive environments.
There are a variety of different kinds of stainless steel , 316. There are several common types, including L F, H, and H variations. Each one is distinct, and each one is designed for distinct purposes. L means that 316L steel is the lowest carbon content, which is below 316.
3316 and 3316L Stainless Steel Common Quality
Although similar to the Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, the Type 316 and 316L both have superior resistance to corrosion and are stronger at higher temperatures. Additionally, they aren't able to be made harder through heat treatment, and they can be easily bent and stretched.
Difference between 316 and 316L Stainless Steel
The stainless steel of 316L is lower in carbon than 316. However, despite its lower carbon content, 316L is very similar to 316 almost in every way. Cost is the same, and both are tough and resistant to corrosion. This makes the two a great choice for conditions that require a lot of stress.
However, for projects that require a significant amount the use of welding, then 316L can be a better choice due to the fact that 316 is more prone to welding corrosion as compared to those using 316L (corrosion in the welding). However, 316 can be annealed to withstand welding attenuation. Also, 316L is a suitable stainless for high temperature, high corrosion applications This is why it is so popular for marine and construction.
The 316L and 304L are not the same. 316L is the most affordable option. The 304 is comparable to the 304L, but the price is lower. This isn't as sturdy as the 317 and 317L that are more durable, with more molybdenum and have better all-around corrosion protection.
